Our very own Roslyn Reed has received the prestigious Adult Service Award from the Rahway Branch of the NAACP. The award was presented at the 70th Annual Freedom Fund and Awards Banquet at the Westwood on November 5th.
Roslyn has been a tutor with LV-UC since 1994. She's currently tutoring a young woman in basic literacy at the Union Library.
"It gives me great pleasure and joy to see my students increase their reading levels and express joy when they read and comprehend words and passages they thought they never would," she says.
From all of us at LV-UC, "Great job, Roslyn! We're so proud of you!!"
We are proud to announce that LV-UC tutor Gail Holland of Roselle was chosen by the Freeholders as a Union County Volunteer of the Year. Many of you may recognize Gail from our recent article "Hats Off". She just finished her third year as the LV-UC tutor for the Elizabeth Head Start. It's a great tutoring gig. Gail teaches a morning session so parents can drop off their kids and then drop into class. Focusing on the family and literacy is important to our learners, so it continues to be important to us. When we help parents improve their skills, they can help their children. Congratulations Gail!
December 22nd was Gail's last class at the Elizabeth Head Start. Although she will be teaching a group at the Roselle Head Start we congratulate her on a new full time position. We thank Gail for her dedication and for sharing her love of English with so many learners.
Our ESL tutors say it all the time: "Our learners need to practice English more than just once hour a week." Well last year a group of LV-UC tutors got together to solve this tutoring conundrum. The result was a survey for students posing the question …."What English 'stuff' outside of weekly tutoring sessions would you be interested in?"
The winner was a scavenger hunt! 82% of the learners who responded said that they would love to try a scavenger hunt in English (you know-- stuff like finding out their mail carrier's favorite color). Second runner up with 64% interest was getting together with other ESL learners for some conversation time. (Perhaps we could organize a practice session at a coffee shop?) Third with 55% was having a meal with native foods where only English is spoken. This sounds like it could really be fun.
Next step … we need your help. We are looking for tutor/student(s) groups who are looking for something new and exciting to try. We'd like to get a scavenger hunt set up by a tutor and their students. A few of these ideas are perfect activities for a tutor student or tutor group activity. For those among our volunteers with higher level ESL folks …this might be a great way to help your fellow tutors while doing a great English activity with your learner.
