New Jersey's Literacy Student of the Year!
Blossom Johnson has a story to share with the world. Four years ago, unable to read above the fifth grade level, she enrolled in the Basic Literacy program at Literacy Volunteers of Union County. Her tutor, Anita Heaton, has been working with her ever since.
Today, Blossom is a Home Health Aide. Recognizing her growth and achievements, Blossom was named as 2003's Literacy Student of the Year for all of New Jersey! Her improved reading skills and dedication have enabled her to reach her goals. "I am so proud of Blossom's accomplishments," says Ms. Heaton. "My life is definitely enriched by knowing her."
As a child, Blossom often missed school so she could help support her family. Despite this setback, she knew that education was the key to success.
Blossom began the Basic Literacy program at Literacy Volunteers of America-Union County in October 1998. "From the very beginning, Blossom has shown an eagerness to learn," Ms. Heaton says. "Her enthusiasm spills over and gives me energy!"
