Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to some of our most commonly heard questions are presented below. Still can't find what you need? Explore some of our other pages, or just call us at (908) 757-1111!

What's the difference between ESL and ESOL?

There's really no difference at all! ESL stands for English as a Second Language. ESOL stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages. ESOL is the new and preferred term, but you'll hear people using both.

Do I have to speak another language if I want to tutor ESOL?

No! There are actually some benefits to speaking only one language. For example, if English is your only language, you won't be tempted to speak in your learner's first language during your ENGLISH tutoring sessions.

Do I have to be a certified teacher if I want to help someone learn to read?

No! We believe that if you can read, you can teach others to read! Our Tutor Training Workshop will give you the skills you need to help someone improve his or her reading.

What kind of tutor training is provided?

LV-UC provides 15 hours of tutor training during six Tutor Training Workshop classes. We offer combined ESOL and Basic Literacy Tutor Training Workshops. Upon your completion of the training, you will be a certified ESOL and Basic Literacy Tutor. We offer these Tutor Training Workshops six times per year. If you would like to be on our mailing list for future training sessions, please give us a call!

What happens after the Tutor Training Workshops? Won't I feel isolated from LV-UC?

While tutoring does allow you the freedom to design your own lessons and set your own schedule, you won't be disconnected from LV-UC! We'll check in with you for monthly updates, and you can call or email the office at any time. There are quarterly Tutor Association meetings where you can meet your fellow tutors and learn a new tutoring technique or two. Our quarterly newsletter and other special events will also keep you in the loop!

How long do I have to be a tutor?

Ideally, we ask that you work with your learner(s) for 50 hours. However, we know that sometimes circumstances and events can interfere with this. Just remember that we are looking for dedicated and committed tutors!
