LV-UC Learners and Tutors in the Star Ledger and on NBC

Literacy Volunteers of Union County students and tutors were the subjects of two media features, one on NBC television on Saturday, June 1, 2002, and the other the next day, June 2 in the Sunday Newark Star-Ledger.

The NBC piece was done by reporter Linda Baquaro and showed LV-UC tutor Juan Fernandez of Elizabeth working with his students in the Elizabeth Public Library.

The Star Ledger story featured tutor Sam McGhee and his student Rickey, and it called attention to the 1-5 gap that exists between the number of active tutors in Union County and the number of students who need their help, particularly in Elizabeth, Union, Roselle, and Roselle Park.

The stories prompted dozens of calls from potential tutors, but many more are needed. We encourage all of our active tutors to be "ambassadors" for LV-UC: tell your friends,co-workers, and family what being a Literacy Volunteers tutor means to you, and to the students you bring into the world of reading, writing and new life options.

Those interested in knowing more should contact Elizabeth or Ginny in the Westfield office of Literacy Volunteers of Union County, (908) 518-0600.
