Tutors Meet for a Slice of LV-UC Pie

Westfield- The second LV Union County Tutor Association meeting was held July 17 at the Westfield Memorial Library. Forty tutors attended from throughout Union County.

Refreshments were served including homemade cookies, lemon bars and other treats, but the main attraction was a serving of intellectual pie from Tom Giovinozzo, tutor trainer for LV Somerset County.

His talk, "Life's Pie: A Goal Setting Tool for Instructors," asked tutors to imagine their lives in the shape of a pie. Slices of the pie were to represent valuable aspects of their lives: family, community service, health, financial success, etc. After drawing their own personal "life's pie," each person was asked to concentrate on one "slice." A goal or two was set based on the contents of the "slice." A quick brainstorming session then assisted in developing activities that would help tutors reach their set goals.

After reviewing "life's pie," tutors discussed ways in which it could become an integral part of goal setting with their learners. Tutors were able to see that this very powerful tool is ideal for anyone wanting to set personal life goals.

Said new tutor Pamela Eagan of Roselle, "It was fascinating to see the parts of my life expressed as parts of a pie. I feel satisfied with my "recipe" and although pie is not part of a balanced diet, the "life pie" can certainly reflect a balanced life."

We hope you will join your fellow tutors at our next Tutor Association meeting for tips on how you can make your LV-UC experience even more meaningful.
