Dollars and Cents: LV-UC Pilots Financial Literacy Program
November 19, 2004
Our very own Liela Bernstein, Cicely Thornton, Janet Fox, and Donna Sandorse were financial literacy gurus during a pilot program at the Elizabeth Public Library in October. This program, designed to enhance awareness of finance as it applies to the home, was sponsored by the City of Elizabeth and Verizon. Six Elizabeth families, members of the city’s Special Opportunities for Achievement and Reawakening (SOAR) and Safe Haven programs, received financial literacy instruction from LV-UC tutors and the municipal Office of Youth.
“The Financial Literacy Program was quite rewarding and educational,” said Cicely Thornton. “My student, Nora, still keeps in touch with me and she has now paid off the "little" store credit cards and is working on the big ones.”
The six week program concluded with a graduation that was attended by Mayor Chris Bollwage and other city and county officials.
